Task 1 - Understanding the purpose of television idents and the opportunities they present

Identify the ident






The ident first appeared in 1953 on BBC as a commercial television began to expand and viewers need to be able to identify different channels

The first ident was BBC and was called (batwings)















In 1960 the first BBC tv logo within a circle was introduced











This is the famous ident this was called the globe which would rotate and voice would announce this is BBC

idents plays an important role this is the break to show other programs to tell them what channel will be on next and later on in the night.This will help to keep the viewers interested to carry on watching.

Creating the right tone and appeal to the target audience
It is important to create the right tone for the channel it is on and is appealing to the target audience.When BBC four arrived it gave a reputation of a more factual and information programming So the idents started to reflect this.


Creating a brand and encouraging brand loyalty
An ident helps to endorse a brand of a particular channel by allowing the ident become familiar with the logo and the style of channel.It is a particular reminder of a particular channel and and imprints the brand int the mind of the audience.This encourages the loyalty of the particular channel.

Creating corporate identity
TV programs are no longer restricted to one country this helps the ident to have more of a range to different locations. With the growth of online plat forms such as bbciplayer it is vital for the corporations to retain the image which could be so easily diluted
